Lahey Clinic Names Howard Grant, JD, MD, Next CEO

Lahey Clinic Names Howard Grant, JD, MD, Next CEO

Howard Grant, JD, MD

Burlington, Mass. (Vocus) September 17, 2010

Lahey Clinic’s Board of Trustees has selected Howard R. Grant, JD, MD, to be Lahey’s next president and chief executive officer. Grant, currently executive vice president and chief medical officer at Geisinger Health System, will succeed David M. Barrett, MD, who has led the Clinic since 1999.

“Dr. Grant understands and appreciates the integrated health care delivery model, and will bring this knowledge and expertise to Lahey,” said Irving E. “Chip” Rogers III, chair of Lahey’s Board of Trustees. “With a strong background in clinical operations, his first priority is and always will be on quality. He is a great fit for Lahey.”

At Geisinger, a group practice with 60 locations and 1200 providers, including three hospital campuses, Grant was responsible, with his administrative colleagues, for operations and budgets for 27 clinical service lines, strategic planning, and physician and administrator recruitment. He was also charged with aligning clinical operations with Geisinger Health Plan, a not-for-profit insurance company based in Danville, Pennsylvania.

Prior to joining Geisinger, Grant had a long tenure at Temple University Health System in Philadelphia, where he served in a succession of leadership roles, including chief medical officer. He was responsible for performance improvement, risk management and patient safety; integration of clinical and operational programs across multiple facilities; and clinical leadership of case and disease management.

“Dr. Grant brings impressive credentials and a track record of growth and performance improvement in health care,” said Jim Henderson, vice chair of Lahey’s Board of Trustees. “His experience managing the operational challenges affecting health care organizations today makes him the right choice to help shape Lahey’s future.”

Grant, a lawyer as well as a physician, began his medical career at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. In addition to serving as a staff pediatrician, he directed quality assurance, risk management and utilization management programs. From 1992 to 1997, he served as corporate vice president for medical affairs at the Chester County Hospital in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

“Lahey Clinic has a history of innovation, and a medical staff which possesses a wealth of clinical expertise,” said Grant. “I feel privileged to be offered the opportunity to serve the Lahey Clinic. I look forward to helping Lahey strive for excellence in patient care and service, and I expect Lahey to continue to grow and lead in the New England region.”

Grant earned both his medical and law degrees from George Washington University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his pediatrics residency at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He is a member of the American Medical Association and the American College of Physician Executives, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Grant was selected after a national search that began last April with the counsel of Heidrick & Struggles executive search. The Board of Trustees initiated the search for a new president and CEO as part of a planned succession when it was announced that Barrett would be stepping down after more than a decade of leadership at Lahey. Grant will begin his new role at Lahey on November 15.

Senior-Level Registered Nurses Keep Hospital Doors Open with New Careers

Senior-Level Registered Nurses Keep Hospital Doors Open with New Careers

Diamond Bar, CA (PRWEB) September 8, 2004

One of the most difficult aspects of healthcare is keeping hospitals, clinics and emergency rooms afloat amidst increasing medical costs and patient needs. In Los Angeles County alone, 9 emergency rooms have closed in the last 14 months. Los Angeles County Public Health Department closed 13 public health clinics prior to these ER closures. When Healthcare facilities move out of the community, everyone suffers. However, new career opportunities for Registered Nurses are changing this trend, putting hospitals back into the black. Record number of senior-level RNs are returning to healthcare jobs working as “RN-Coders” and “RN-Auditors” resulting in immediate reimbursements for hospitals and less out-of-pocket expenses for patients.

“Coding” is the translation of medical terms, procedures and diagnoses into procedural and diagnostic codes. These codes, developed by the American Medical Association (Current Procedural Terminology) and the International Classification of Disease-9th edition, updated by the Department of Health and Human Services, are required by HIPAA. Only through these essential codes can hospitals, physicians and other healthcare providers obtain payment for services rendered.

“Since Medicare altered the way it pays for all outpatient services in August 2000, it has become clear that many hospitals have not implemented coding compliance programs, resulting in poor reimbursements, fraud cases, and hospital closures,” states Joyce Thomas, Executive Director of the American Association of Clinical Coders & Auditors. Previously, all coding was undertaken by the clinically untrained clerical staff. “AACCA certifies RNs and other clinical personnel in coding and chart audit activities,” Thomas continues, “giving hospitals and medical groups competent personnel” which results in “a 30% – 40% increase in reimbursements to hospitals in a short time, ” concludes Hilary Falconer, a senior nurse manager responsible for chart audits and a member of the AACCA Board of Directors.

It is a proven fact that “when hospitals and physicians work with RN-Coders to produce quality documentation and coding, correct and expedient reimbursement will result,” Thomas emphasized. “These new opportunities for senior-level RNs re-entering hospitals will ensure hospitals get paid correctly the first time around.”

About American Association of Clinical Coders & Auditors, (AACCA)

American Association of Clinical Coders & Auditors is a non-profit, 501(c)3 educational organization. AACCA is currently the only organization to certify clinical personnel in coding and auditing. AACCA also launched the nation’s first computer-based examination for coding certification last year and has certified over 150 RNs, MDs, Physical Therapists, and other clinical personnel in coding.

Hospital Rating Site Launched, RateYourHospitalStay.com

Hospital Rating Site Launched, RateYourHospitalStay.com

Pasadena, CA (PRWEB) March 3, 2009

RateYourHospitalStay.com, http://www.rateyourhospitalstay.com , is a newly launched website that provides opinions and ratings of hospitals across the U.S. The site also allows people who have recently undergone a hospital stay to rate their experiences and share their opinions. The site is based on the premise that by providing an online mechanism to unite the opinions of those recently hospitalized with those who may be considering hospitalization, the information can help people make informed decisions about which health care facilities best fits their needs.

“Our mission with RateYourHospitalStay.com is to shine a light on unbiased assessments of patient care for other consumers who are often ill-informed of their choices,” says Founder of RateYourHospitalStay.com Joseph Reed. “Through better, more complete and dynamic information, consumers will be able to separate the good hospitals from the bad.”

Reed says most of the information about hospitals and healthcare facilities on the web today is provided by companies who are owned or controlled by those in the healthcare industry or groups who benefit from keeping information limited. RateYourHospitalStay.com is completely independent, dedicated to providing the best possible unbiased information to consumers. The site is not funded or supported by any hospital or healthcare corporation. Its support comes solely from the advertising sponsors on the site.

RateYourHospitalStay.com is also committed to being a free service. All that is required is registering in order to complete surveys and post comments. Registration is easy and simply requires having a valid email address. RateYourHospitalStay.com does not sell or give any private information to outside sources and is a member of the Ratings and Reviews Professional Association.

RateYourHospitalStay.com surveys include questions on:

Admissions Process
Hospital Facilities
Food and Nutrition
Nursing Care
Visitor Experience
Discharge Process

The rating system is a five-star system with:

1 Star = Unacceptable
2 Stars = Poor
3 Stars = Average
4 Stars = Good
5 Stars = Excellent

All ratings for each hospital facility are combined and averaged to arrive at a score.

Currently there are over 4,500 U.S. hospitals listed on the RateYourHospitalStay.com website. If consumers don’t find a particular hospital listed, it can easily be added to the database by contacting RateYourHospitalStay.com via the “Contact Us” page with the name, city and state of the hospital they wish to include. Within 72 hours it will be added to the site. People can also search by zip code to view information on all the hospitals in a particular area.

RateYourHospitalStay.com encourages people to include personal comments, both positive and negative, as long as they relate to a hospital experience. The survey is specific to hospital facilities and the treatment received in and by the hospital staff. The information not only helps individuals in choosing a hospital or facility that best fits their needs, but additionally, by making the information public, hospitals may see the need to reevaluate their patient care services. Economic Crisis Hits Maryland Hospitals Nearly 60 Percent of Hospitals Sustain Financial Losses

Economic Crisis Hits Maryland Hospitals Nearly 60 Percent of Hospitals Sustain Financial Losses

Maryland Hospital Association

Elkridge, MD (PRWEB) March 26, 2009

The economic crisis is taking a significant toll on Maryland hospitals, causing their finances to slide to unprecedented low levels during the final quarter of 2008. Maryland hospitals’ total margins dropped to negative 13.5 percent between October 1 and December 31, 2008, compared to 2.2 percent during the same time in 2007. Hospitals’ total margins had already fallen to a negative 2.5 percent in the quarter ending September 30, 2008. Total margins measure the overall financial condition of Maryland’s hospitals, which are almost exclusively not-for-profit facilities.

“At the very time when the economy is forcing more Marylanders to turn to hospitals for their only source of health care, the economy is crippling Maryland hospitals’ ability to meet the growing demand,” Carmela Coyle, MHA President and CEO, said. “That means hospitals have significantly less money to hire new staff, invest in new services and programs or technology, to upgrade buildings, or to help physicians.”

The situation in Maryland is far worse than for hospitals nationwide, where the deficit for total margins was negative 7.8 percent for the final three months of 2008.

Thirty-four Maryland hospitals sustained overall losses during that three-month period totaling $ 466 million, according to a new financial analysis by the Maryland Hospital Association.

Most of hospitals’ losses resulted from increases in interest rates, losses on returns, and other increases in costs needed to provide financing to upgrade or expand programs and to underwrite the costs of new technology. Operating margins–which measure financial performance in providing care–while dropping, did not fall as precipitously. Overall operating margins in the fourth quarter of 2008 were 1.5 percent–down from 2.4 percent in the quarter ending September 30. That is well below the rate-setting commission’s target of 2.75 percent and below the 1.8 percent operating margins for hospitals nationwide for the quarter ending December 31.

The losses Maryland hospitals face are forcing them to limit their purchases of new technology and equipment, and to delay upgrades in information technology according to a new MHA survey. Hospitals also report adopting, or considering, hiring freezes and staff reductions; eliminating vacant positions; and cutting administrative spending, including educational and meeting expenses. In addition, hospitals report the losses have led to a significant increase in hospitals’ pension liability costs.

Furthermore, the survey found the economy is forcing more and more physicians to approach hospitals for financial support, ranging from widespread requests for hospital employment to nearly universal requests for pay increases to provide services to hospitals. In 2008 hospitals provided $ 210 million in support to physicians.

“With a physician shortage particularly intense in inner city Baltimore and rural parts of the state, financial support for doctors is vital to assure access to care in these areas,” Coyle said.

“Hospitals are the bedrocks of our communities, both as providers of health care to all who need assistance and as the economic engines for our communities,” Coyle added. “Anything that weakens our hospitals poses a threat to the economy of Maryland and the well-being of our state.”

MHA is the advocate for Maryland hospitals, health systems, and their patients before legislative and regulatory bodies. Its membership is comprised of community and teaching hospitals, health systems, specialty hospitals, veterans hospitals, and long-term care facilities. For more information, visit MHA’s Web site.

Carefx to Collaborate with the Cleveland Clinic to Commercialize CCF Business Intelligence Solution

Carefx to Collaborate with the Cleveland Clinic to Commercialize CCF Business Intelligence Solution

SCOTTSDALE, AZ (Vocus) May 18, 2010

Carefx Corp., a leading provider of interoperable workflow solutions, announced today that it has been granted exclusive license rights to market and further develop the Cleveland Clinic business intelligence (BI) dashboards that are a part of IntellisEPM, a Clinic start up.

Cleveland Clinic formed IntellisEPM to commercialize a number of its BI dashboards currently being used to manage business and clinical performance at Cleveland Clinic. These drive performance through enhanced decision making by providing views of data relevant to the clinical or executive user. The dashboards leverage a BI technology platform to help accelerate performance improvement across the health system, including financial performance, workforce management, quality and patient experience. The dashboards, currently in use at Cleveland Clinic and other academic medical centers, produce comprehensive, customized reports on key performance drivers such as core measures, mortality, physician scorecard, throughput and patient experience.

“There are few contemporary tools available to hospital management that have the potential for impact as do business intelligence dashboards,” said Chris Coburn, Executive Director of Cleveland Clinic Innovations, the Clinic’s corporate venturing arm. “These dashboards were developed by teams of Cleveland Clinic medical, operational and finance leaders to comprehensively drive performance throughout our institution.”

Fusionfx, Carefx’s interoperable workflow platform, provides browser-based access to real-time patient information by creating composite views of clinical information from multiple sources. Fusionfx aggregates clinical data and delivers it to providers via a portal in formats that are customized and clinically intuitive.

“With the addition of the BI dashboards, we will be able to offer our customers a greater level of insight into their data to improve both financial and patient outcomes,” said Andrew Hurd, Chairman and CEO of Carefx. “That additional level of strategic business information will help healthcare institutions understand and act upon how their clinicians are performing, what patients are experiencing and where efficiencies can be made.”

About Cleveland Clinic Innovations

Innovations, the corporate venturing arm of Cleveland Clinic, promotes innovation and is responsible for the commercialization of all Cleveland Clinic technologies. Innovations advances product-oriented innovation and transforms promising therapies, devices, diagnostics and software into beneficial medical products, via spin-off companies, licensees and equity partnerships. There have been 33 companies spun off from the Clinic in the last decade, more than 200 licenses, more than $ 340 million in equity investment in those spin-offs and a record number of inventions in virtually every area of activity at Cleveland Clinic.

About Carefx Corporation

Carefx supports healthcare organizations in achieving their vision of advancing the quality and safety of patient care delivery through its Fusionfx suite of interoperable workflow solutions.
