Sierra Tucson’s 24th Annual Alumni Retreat (S.T.A.R. 24) was all about celebrating the miracles of recovery and creating new miracles for children who are hurting. Over 150 Sierra Tucson alumni gathered the weekend of November 3-6, 2011, to reconnect and renew their passion for recovery and self-care. Alumni in attendance represented a wide range of years, from the ’80s and ’90s through 2011.

This year’s retreat theme was “Carrying the Message.” Alumni were encouraged to think about “how we carry the message of hope and love to the world” and were given an unexpected chance to do so. Behind the scenes, Senior Alumni Coordinator Tim McLeod had planned an exercise into the retreat where alumni worked together in teams with an unknown outcome.

On Friday afternoon, the alumni gathered on a sunny, grassy field at the Westward Look Resort and found 25 stations stocked with bicycle parts and tools. Splitting into teams, the alumni collaborated to assemble the bikes, calling on assistance from their own “Bicycle Inspection Team,” as needed.

When the bikes were almost complete, a large group of children surprised the alumni as they swarmed the field to claim the bikes that they were excited to receive.

The children were brought by Tu Nidito Children and Family Services, an organization that provides comfort, hope, and support for children and families whose lives have been impacted by a serious medical condition or death. Tu Nidito, which means “your little nest,” gives emotional, social, and educational tools to children and families and empowers them with strength and skills for the future.

Tim McLeod became connected to Tu Nidito through Sonia Hammrich, Sales Manager for Westward Look Resort, where the Alumni Retreat was held.

“Shortly after the shootings on January 8, 2011, had impacted my 9-year-old daughter, Serenity, Tim came to us for help in planning the annual Alumni Retreat.” explained Sonia. “Serenity was best friends with Christina Taylor Green. We had found rich support for Serenity at Tu Nidito, so when Tim asked about a group of children to help, I immediately thought of the wonderful children who are supported through Tu Nidito.”

While the bikes were being built, the children ate lunch at the Westward Look Resort. The surprised alumni warmly welcomed the children and were overjoyed with the opportunity to give bicycles and helmets to them. One alumni commented, “I really enjoyed that activity and the cause… I was touched by who the bikes were going to.”

Serenity and her mother, Sonia, joined Tim on the field to express their own appreciation and thanks from the children at Tu Nidito. “Serenity wanted to be there to thank the people,” said Sonia. “This has all been part of the healing process for her.”

“It didn’t matter if you were young or old,” Tim McLeod affirmed, “lives were touched. Everyone gained something from this. One alumnus was able to teach a child to ride his bike. Two children are happy to be able to participate in the Junior El Tour de Tucson next weekend because they now have bikes. One child and alumnus found mutual encouragement when they discovered a shared loss of losing of a family member to cancer.”

“When we step aside and work together with other people, taking the time to give back and connect, we can make a difference and help others who are hurting,” continued Tim. “That does more for us spiritually and emotionally than anything money can buy. Everyone walked away full of gratitude to be a part of the event.”

Although rates and classification codes are determined by the state, the premiums you pay are not alike with all agencies and carriers. The rate is based on a myriad of factors which Prime Insurance so expertly applies to each individual case as needed. Although David now put his full trust in Prime Insurance Agency, he thought it would be beneficial to share some basic rules of how the workers compensation rates are calculated.

The classification code is what impacts the premiums most directly. The classification code for clerical work, is usually the lowest, while the classification for the construction trades (especially carpentry,) is usually much higher. Why? Carpenters get hurt on the job more often then a clerical worker would. When a workers compensation policy is written, and all employees are listed under the same carpentry classification, when some are in fact secretaries, salesman, or drivers, that will cost the company thousands of premium dollars!

The experience modifier is also a critical part of the calculation. If a company’s claim history is low it will serve as a discount and decrease the premium. A new business, or a business with a high claim history can not take advantage of this discount. In the case of BD Builders, with 16 years of experience and a minimal claim record, the experience factor should have been emphasized at renewal so they’d get the break in premium they deserved.

The final premium is a multiple value to be applied to every $ 100 of payroll. When the construction industry got hit by the economic crisis, and BD workload was drastically reduced, David had to fire some employees. He managed to cut his payroll, thereby cutting his workers compensation premiums, but that alone proved not to be enough. A professional review of payroll history can result in a lower estimated payroll and lower resulting premium.

The Healthy Out-of-School Time Coalition(HOST) comprised of leaders in out-of-school time care and health promotion brought together by the National Institute on Out-of-School Time (NIOST) at the Wellesley Centers for Women at Wellesley College, the University of Massachusetts Boston (UMB) and the YMCA of the USA (Y-USA), announce the first-ever comprehensive national nutrition and physical activity standards for out-of-school programs for children in grades K-12. The new guidelines are the latest tool in the fight against childhood obesity and a step in promoting healthy options for the more than eight million children that participate in out-of-school programs at least three hours a day, according to statistics from the HOST Coalition.

The new standards are the result of a comprehensive research project funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Over the course of a year, HOST conducted a national online survey of more than 700 out-of-school programs across the country, and examined best practices and existing standards and guidelines for providing healthy eating and physical activity opportunities. The survey included participation from many local Ys, one of the nation’s largest providers of afterschool programs.

“Energy balance and appropriate physical activity are critical to good health and preventing childhood obesity, which is reaching record numbers in this country. Out-of-school programs provide opportunities for children to not only consume nutritious snacks but also to learn real-life strategies for evaluating food options and making healthy choices,” says project co-leader Ellen S. Gannett, director of NIOST. “If out-of-school programs can influence smart choices for children when they’re away from home and out of the classroom, they will be an important component in the campaign to fight childhood obesity.”

Among the recommended standards outlined for out-of-school programs – which include before and after school programs, day camps, and overnight camps – are:


Serving fruits and vegetables (fresh, frozen or canned) as options instead of cake, cookies, candy and chips

Offering water as the preferred drink option during snack times instead of juices, punch boxes or soda

Dedicating at least 20 percent or at least 30 minutes of morning or afterschool program time to physical activity (60 minutes for a full day program)

Ensuring that daily physical activity time includes aerobic and age-appropriate muscle and bone strengthening and cardio-respiratory fitness activities

In addition, the new standards elevate the importance of training out-of-school program staff on the role of healthy eating, physical activity and social supports for healthy behavior.

“The Y is proud to be part of this work to ensure that any time a child spends at a Y, and particularly time spent in afterschool programming, is structured to shape healthy habits for a lifetime,” explains Barbara Roth, national director of youth and family programs at Y-USA and senior advisor in the development of these standards. “As a leading nonprofit in strengthening communities through healthy living, the Y’s out-of-school programs provide a safe and nurturing environment to nearly 2 million children each year, with many of these children spending more time at their local Ys than in school throughout the year, making the significance of these standards even greater,” says Roth.

The next step in the process is to educate all out-of-school providers on the standards and begin implementation. The HOST Coalition hopes that out-of-school programs will begin the process by conducting a self-assessment to see how they stack-up when compared to the standards and then begin to implement change. Local Ys around the country will begin evaluating their out-of-school programming and begin the process of adopting the standards this year.

The Global Spa Summit (GSS) today released key findings from its research initiative “Wellness Tourism and Medical Tourism: Where Do Spas Fit?” – the most comprehensive investigation of the wellness tourism and medical tourism industries to date. The 100-plus-page report contains: an overview of existing definitions, industry data, and organizational and promotional models underway worldwide; twelve national case studies; results from a survey of 200+ industry stakeholders; and recommendations for governments and businesses going forward.

Key Findings:

    Governments should develop and promote medical tourism and wellness tourism separately.
    Wellness tourism represents by far the best “fit” for the spa industry, and already generates twice the global revenues of the more-established medical tourism market ($ 106 bil. vs. $ 50 bil. USD).*
    Persistent terminology confusion, combined with weak or generic promotion, is significantly holding back these emerging travel categories.

“This report should be read by every tourism board, spa and medical facility worldwide,” noted Susie Ellis, GSS Board Member. “Medical tourists and wellness tourists spend 3 to 5 times more than the average tourist, and the financial opportunities within both these sectors are vast. This research will help public and private players establish smarter overall strategies, organizational structures and marketing campaigns to more powerfully position themselves within these lucrative markets.”

Key Roadblock: Conceptual Confusion

Wellness tourism’s and medical tourism’s growth are being stymied by inconsistent, confusing terminology and conceptual intermingling. The survey of 200+ executives reveals a dramatic lack of consensus around definitions/concepts, even among industry players.

    25% of executive respondents left the request for open-ended definitions of “medical,” “wellness” and “health” tourism blank, or answered “don’t know.”
    66% couldn’t provide a “health tourism” definition, or responded, “don’t know,” revealing confusion around this term is especially acute.
    89% report medical tourism and wellness tourism are used/defined inconsistently around the world.
    95% argued inconsistent definitions are causing consumer confusion, and that a common language needs be established.

Recommendations:

    Clear, consistent definitions need to be established globally. Usage of “health tourism” should be avoided, because the term “health” is associated both with the medical arena and complementary medicine/spas.
    Suggested “core” definitions: a “medical tourist” travels “because they’re generally ill, or seeking cosmetic/dental surgical procedures/enhancements,” while a “wellness tourist” travels because they’re “seeking integrated wellness/preventative approaches to improve their health/quality of life.”
     Governments and private entities should not intermingle these tourisms at the language, organizational or marketing level.

Key Roadblock: Weak or Generic Promotion

Combining case study data (a global cross-section of national approaches: Austria, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Morocco, Philippines, South Africa, Thailand), with the survey results, reveals that governmental promotion of these tourisms is often non-existent, inconsistent or “unbranded.”

    Only 29% of respondents (globally) report their tourism organizations are actively promoting medical tourism, 35% for wellness tourism. (Only 17% report both domestic and international tourists are being targeted.)
    North America lags Europe and Asia: Only 11% of U.S. and Canadian respondents report medical tourism is being promoted, 19% for wellness tourism.
    57% of European executives report wellness tourism is being promoted, 41% for medical tourism.
    57% of Asian executives report their country promotes medical tourism, 50% that they promote wellness tourism.
    Arguably no country studied has developed a strong, unique national brand image for either medical or wellness tourism, even perceived market leaders.

Recommendations:

    Medical tourism marketers need to capitalize on/promote their true medical specialties.
    Wellness tourism marketers need to communicate their wealth of indigenous, natural-asset-based wellness/healing traditions, as branding will become increasingly important as markets become more competitive.
    Domestic, intra-regional and international medical and wellness tourists all need to be uniquely targeted.
