ONC Approves HIE Strategic and Operational Plan for Guam

ONC Approves HIE Strategic and Operational Plan for Guam

Tampa, FL (PRWEB) May 10, 2011

Hielix, a leader in creating operationally sustainable, open solutions to seamlessly exchange health information, today announced the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) for Health IT has approved the Strategic and Operational Plan (SOP) for a Health Information Exchange (HIE) for the Territory of Guam. The SOP developed by Hielix, along with its partner, ApeniMED, describes the strategies and activities necessary for advancing the adoption of electronic health records (EHR) through the creation of a health information network in Guam. Hielix and ApeniMED are currently working with the territory to build the HIE and have it sustainable by 2015.

In addition to better patient care, adoption of HIE in Guam will improve safety and efficiency by ensuring health information is available to healthcare providers at the point of care, while reducing medical errors and avoiding duplicative procedures. It will also improve coordination of care between hospitals, physicians, and other health professionals, providing consumers access to quality care and cost information, including their own health information, in an effort to encourage greater participation in their healthcare decisions.

“ONC’s approval represents a major milestone in the development of the health information exchange in Guam, said Patti Dodgen, CEO of Hielix. “We are confident the strategic and operational plan we developed in partnership with ApeniMED puts Guam on course for successful HIE implementation and ultimate sustainability.”

Hielix and ApeniMED have been retained by Guam to design and implement the HIE, establish an HIE business and financial sustainability plan that will identify short-and long-term strategies for raising revenue and becoming self-sustainable. The HIE is expected to become operational by the end of this year (2011).

“Guam is moving forward with the adoption and use of technology to improve healthcare quality, patient safety and overall efficiency of healthcare and public health services in the territory,” said Ed Cruz, Chief Information Officer for the Territory. “Working with our partners, Hielix and ApeniMED, the necessary foundation is in place for us to begin realizing an efficient, secure and financially sustainable HIE that offers quality healthcare for everyone on the island of Guam.”
